Geothermal Explorers Ltd (GEL) was founded in 1999 by Markus Häring. Trigger were the first field operations of the Deep Heat Mining project in Basel. The project for a first EGS pilot plant was initiated by the Deep Heat Mining Association headed by Markus Häring.

Between 2001 and 2006 GEL has drilled two reconnaissance wells: Otterbach 1 (570 m), Otterbach 2 (2'755 m), developed a microseismic monitoring system consisting of four additional wells (320 – 550 m) and has drilled Basel 1 to a depth of 5'000 m. Due to unacceptably high seismicity during the stimulation phase further field operations – except logging and low level flow tests – have been suspended.

The know-how accumulated in the hitherto successful project has sparked international interest. This led to various consulting contracts with internationally operating energy companies in Germany, Australia and South Korea. In addition we have expanded our activities to a broader energy resource exploration, in particular gas and geothermal in combination. These new activities are executed under the newly founded Geothermal Explorers International Ltd.
